ASTM D2256
Tensile Test on Yarns
Static testing machines from THELKIN are suitable for tensile testing of yarns in accordance with ASTM D2256.
Background
The test standard ASTM D2256 specifies the method for determining the tensile properties of yarns by the single strand method. This allows the determination of the quality of raw materials as well as the quality control of the final product.
Test Setup
The ASTM D2256 standard provides common specifications for determining the breaking strength and elongation of threads, yarns or other single strand textiles. The specimen can be tested in three different physical configurations: straight, knotted or looped.
The sample is clamped in the appropriate fixture and pulled at a constant speed until failure occurs. The test results can then be used to determine the toughness, modulus and strength of the material.

Equipment
Static tests according to ASTM D2256 can be performed easily, reliably and reproducibly with servo-static testing systems from THELKIN and the corresponding specimen holder:
- THELKIN Servo Static Load Frame SSL-S-010 - complies with the specifications of the standard and allows easy and safe specimen mounting, test programming, data acquisition and test execution.
- Bollard Grip GR.BO - allows fast and precise fixing of the specimen.
The system can also be equipped with an uninterruptible power supply - connected to the THEKLIN controller. This configuration allows the test to be continued in the event of a power interruption or to be switched off safely in order not to damage the specimen and the set-up.
